Magnesium is a reactive metal. It will react with oxygen and form a white layer of
magnesium oxide (MgO) on its surface. Magnesium oxide is a stable compound and will
prevent the further reaction of the metal. So, a magnesium ribbon is cleaned before burning in
air to remove the layer of magnesium oxide from its surface.
